WHAT IS A “S.M.A.R.T. CASE”?

S.M.A.R.T. stands for:

Science,
Math,
Activity,
Reading, &
Teaching

S.M.A.R.T. Cases are boxed kits that include science activities and supplementary materials that make it a complete learning package for young people.

S.M.A.R.T. Cases are sponsored by the Torrance Refining Company.

WHY IS THIS CASE SO “S.M.A.R.T.”?
S.M.A.R.T. Cases are science kits designed for hands-on learning. They come with the tools and resources to make learning fun and easy. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) requires that students engage in practice-rich activities that support their use of the case contents to figure out and explain complex phenomena and make connections to principles that cut across the content areas (NRC, 2012; NGSS Lead States, 2013).
With the assistance of faculty at Torrance Unified School District, each case was evaluated for grade level and compliance with the framework for the NGSS.

HOW DO I BORROW A S.M.A.R.T. CASE?

All S.M.A.R.T. Cases must be checked out by an adult (18 years old or older) at a Library Circulation
Desk.All S.M.A.R.T. Cases check out for three weeks.
Only one case is allowed per family at a time.

S.M.A.R.T. CASE RULES:

Children using these cases should be within the recommended age range listed on the case tag.	Each S.M.A.R.T. Case contains a detailed list of all items in the case.
Adult supervision is always recommended.	If any piece of a set is lost or damaged, the library cardholder will be charged the replacement cost and a $10.00 non-refundable processing fee.
The library cardholder is responsible for the case and its contents.	Late fees are $1 per day.
S.M.A.R.T. Cases must be returned inside the library.	S.M.A.R.T. Cases may be placed on hold.
Library staff will verify that all parts are inside the case before discharging.	S.M.A.R.T. Cases may be renewed if there are no hold requests.
