In April 1869, the Reverend William H.H. Murray published his most famous book: Adventures in the Wilderness. It was the first book to tell Americans that camping was a form of recreation, where one could escape the worst aspects of modern life to find refreshment and renewal.
Please join Professor Terence Young for an illustrated talk about the Reverend Murray, his book, and several disputes spawned by this flood of new campers. Professor Young is the author of Heading Out: A History of American Camping.
